Dr. McBride Peter Nkhalamba

Dr. McBride Peter Nkhalamba (born August 16, 1972) is a Malawian statecraft luminary and current Director of Governance and Specialised Reporting Ag. at the African Union’s APRM Continental Secretariat, an autonomous entity of the African Union. For the past two decades, Dr. Nkhalamba has contributed significantly to the thinking and evolution of established practices in Africa and applied understanding of international diplomacy, public administration, public policy, and global governance.  

He has an extensive executive and strategic leadership background in multilateral institutions, international organizations and state-affiliated institutions dealing with the highest levels of policymaking in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States. His previous executive appointments include Head of Policy and Programmes, (Southern Africa Trust, 2014), Senior Visiting Fellow (Atlantic Council of the United States, 2010), Team Leader (European Commission Project, 2001), and Head of Policy (ActionAid International, 2006). Dr. Nkhalamba was also in the leadership of the Long-Term Training programme at the Malawi Institute of Management (2011), where he also taught Public Policy and Administration, under a University of Bolton post-graduate programme. He has also provided leadership to the establishment of continental financial institutions and initiatives on economic and political governance. These include the Support to African Union member states in sovereign credit ratings, the Pan-African Inter-Party Dialogue Platform on Governance, and the African Governance Seminar Series. Dr Nkhalamba has also been a member of the Great Lakes Security Policy Group and the Africa Governance Campus Continental Reference Group and several bords.

Born in Lilongwe, Malawi, Dr Nkhalamba attended the University of Malawi, Chancellor College graduating with a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Demography and Psychology in 1994. He was awarded the William Fulbright Scholarship in 2009 and went on to study Public Administration and International Relations at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, University of Syracuse, New York, USA graduating with an Executive Master of Public Administration – Master of Public Administration joint degree and a Master of Arts in International Relations degree. In 2018, McBride obtained his Doctorate in Administration (Doctor of Administration) from the College of Law and Management, University of KwaZulu Natal, Westville, Durban, South Africa focusing on the confluence between regional integration, state functionalism, and public-private partnerships.

He has since published in the areas of African sovereign credit ratings and corporate governance, in addition to a variety of official policy reports.
